We arrived at our VRBO rental and were very surprised to find that it was not as listed. The unit was described as an upper-level condo but is actually a basement-level unit. While the main living area had some natural light via sliding glass doors, the entry, bedroom, and bathroom had no windows or ventilation.Upon entry, we were hit with an overwhelming musty, basement/mildew smell, which was immediately concerning from a health standpoint and clearly consistent with water damage or mold. The unit also contained a large dehumidifier system running continuously—a clear indication that the host was aware of a moisture or mold issue. This system was not shown or disclosed in any listing photos or description. Had we known this, we would have recognized it as a red flag and never booked the property.I have a documented medical condition related to mold illness. Staying in an environment like this would have been detrimental to my health, making the situation not only uncomfortable but dangerous.We contacted the host right away, and she initially agreed to issue a refund. At the time, we had nowhere else to go and tried in good faith to stick it out. Within a short time—just 15 minutes after her original agreement—we realized we could not safely or comfortably stay and informed her that we were leaving.We did not disturb or use anything in the unit and left promptly. Unfortunately, the host has since refused to honor her initial agreement and became irate.
