Our tour to the highland resort at Landmannalaugar offers visitors the chance to get back to nature away from the hustle and bustle of the more frequented tourist spots in Iceland.
The tour begins in Reykjavík and we offer pickup from various locations in the capital area. Our highland bus is equipped to tackle the sometimes difficult roads to Landmannalaugar and we will even ford some small rivers along the way.
Our first stop of the day offers stunning scenery and also serves as a welcome break on the long journey to our final destination. Hjalparfoss waterfallis a two-pronged waterfall, with each prong fed by a different river, the Fossa and and the Thorsa. The falls are framed on both sides by distinctive basalt walls.
Our next destination is Hnausapollur Volcanic Crater Lake. Formed in an explosive volcanic eruption 1100 years ago, the crater is below the water table which resulted in the crater filling with water, forming a crater lake. The lake is famous for its blue color which led to the lakes other name in Icelandic, Blahylur, or blue deep place.
We continue on to the star attraction of the day, Landmannalaugar. This mecca for hikers is difficult to reach and with bumpy roads and rivers crossing making it inaccessible for most regular cars. We will get you there in safety and relative comfort.
Icelanders come to this region to camp and take day camps or use it as the starting point for the famous Laugarvegur hiking trail to Thorsmork, 55 hilly and winding kilometers to the south. We wont tackle that trail but your expert guide will take you for a short hike through the centuries old lava fields towards the colorful rhyolite hills for which the area is world renowned. This landscape is unique and attracts visitors from all over the globe.
Another remnant of the areas volcanic past is the geothermal hot-pools by the campgrounds. These hot-springs are perfect for a relaxing and replenishing bathe. Your bathing fee is included in your tour fee. Just remember to bring your towel and swimsuit.
In the late afternoon we say good-bye to the highlands and begin the journey back towards civilization and the comforts of the city.
