I’m not someone who likes to write bad reviews, and I’m hoping this comes off as informative instead of scathing. I’m absolutely happy that so many other enjoy this cabin, and Lonnie is a super nice guy, but I want to be honest about the level of “rustic” to prevent anyone else from winding up in my situation. I’d like to preface this by saying that I have stayed in several remote rustic old UP cabins throughout the years. This was not my first rodeo with the UP, old cabins, gravel roads, or UP flies. I get it.
I stayed at this property for one night. There is a difference between “rustic’” and run down. This property was the latter. Thankfully, I found another place the next morning.
Upon arrival, the doors were wide open, which was a little disconcerting. I’m sure it was for ventilation as it was a hot day, but because the screen doors don’t fit the door frames properly, a lot of bugs had gotten in. I went to work with my bug spray can that I always bring, because, again, not my first UP rodeo. Meanwhile, as I’m spraying, I find mouse traps and bait stations in corners. Well, I brought dogs with me, so that won’t work, snapped all the traps and picked the bait stations up. I check out the lower level and then went upstairs to check out the sleeping loft. Apparently a majority of the flies that had come in the gaps around the screen door had settled up there. I didn’t have the time or patience to swat all the flies after driving all day, and I wasn’t going to sleep in that, so we slept downstairs on the pull out sofa.
When I went in the bathroom, I notice the water in the toilet and sink was BROWN. Like BROWN. Then I peeked in the shower to find the walls and tub stained with brown from the water. I always bring drinking water to UP cabins because I’m used to it not being very tasty, but usually I can shower in it.
There wasn’t a dish, appliance or surface in the kitchen I found clean enough to use. The refrigerator, which was cranked to the max, was barely going to chill anything, and that was probably because the entire inside of the door is broken and has insulation sticking out.
It was a hot day when we got there, and there aren’t enough functional windows for adequate ventilation on a hot day. The fans helped. The portable air conditioner was great.
Im truly gladly so many other enjoy it and wish Lonnie the best, just wanted to be clear about the condition of the property. I personally did not feel safe or comfortable at all.
