It breaks my heart to see a vacation rental in this disarray, fully knowing that if the property owners/managers invested even the tiniest effort and a few dollars it could easily be a 4 or 5 star property. Everything you read in the reviews is true; the unit is extremely dated and it's sad that the owners/managers haven't taken the time to address it. The washing machine sounds like a propeller plane and barely works, the oven only partially works, and along with these two appliances they should spend a couple thousand dollars to upgrade all the appliances in the unit; I'm certain they'd see an ROI on the energy savings alone. We stayed in the "winter," so luckily the lack of AC wasn't an issue and the fans helped circulate the air well enough. There was no welcome packet that explained how to access wifi, use the TV, contains general rules and perhaps even some local recommendations -- we had to call the property manager, and she answered the phone already knowing what we were calling about; we're clearly not the first guests to run into this issue and if they had a piece of paper with these instructions it'd save everyone the hassle. The building is just as dated as the unit, the call box wasn't working and it was a slight challenge to get in initially but easily overcome.
The area is in an extremely impoverished part of the island and fairly remote (93 does not connect to north). This results in not many stores/shops/restaurants (certainly none of quality) near by, a homeless population in the area is rampant, and there is considerable traffic if you want to leave the area (takes an hour to get to the Honolulu area, and 2+ hours to get North or East) which you may want to do as the snorkling, beaches and hikes in this area are subpar compared to that in other parts of this island.
The best part of the area, and property, is the westward facing sunset views. We didn't see many turtles, but we saw plenty of whales every evening. The views from the unit are truly spectacular (with the exception of the homeless tents which are an eyesore and terrorize the view).
I will not be staying at this property again, nor will I likely be staying in O'ahu again -- every other island I've visited I've found significantly better. The only reason I'd ever recommend staying here (this part of the island) is if you wanted a remote getaway, but unfortunately the condition of this specific property isn't akin to accommodate said getaway.
