The location of this property (about 15-20 minutes from Hilo) can't be beat. It's quiet and the scenery and views are absolutely stunning.
That said, there are a few things that aren't mentioned in the description of the listing that might have changed our minds about staying at the house.
1. The cleaning fee is ridiculously high (double to triple) in comparison to other VRBO homes that we have stayed at. Generally I wouldn't complain about this, but there were dirty dishes in the cabinets and you are expected to haul your own trash to a transfer station if you accumulate more than what can fit in the already undersized trash can on the property. You are also expected to start a load of towels before you leave and all dishes are supposed to be put away. The lint trap on the dryer was also full (I know it wasn't from us because there was dog hair with the lint and our dog was at home) Based on this, you don't seem to get much for the high fee.
2. The internet connection is via satellite due to the remote location. It is spotty at best and there is a data cap. Generally, this wasn't an issue for us because we weren't on vacation to use the internet. If you plan on working remotely, this might not be the best location for you. Cellular service is also hit and miss, so I'm not even sure a hotspot would be viable.
3. The dishwasher doesn't work very well. We ended up doing all of our dishes by hand. The property management company has "please conserve resources" info in the house, but this doesn't seem to apply to dishes.
4. Be prepared to buy all of your condiments, spices, etc Most of the Vrbo properties that we have stayed at least have the very basic from previous guests, but Turnkey informed us in our check out instructions that all items like that must either be taken with you or thrown away. Seems like a waste of resources.
5. There is no local guidebook on the property like at most Vrbo's. Everything is corporate feeling and impersonal. "Pick up brochures at the airport" is their advice.
6. The "pet friendly" part of the listing is deceiving. You can have pets on the property, but they aren't allowed in the house. This ended up not being a huge deal for us because we left our dog at home (the process for bringing a dog into HI is difficult), but just be aware.
It's still a beautiful listing and amazing property and I would stay again.
