We absolutely loved our stay in the La Cava nel Barisano Suite. Rosalba and Gianfranco were wonderful and generous hosts providing us with breakfast supplies and beautiful cakes. They recommended where to park and guided us into the Sassi in the dark. Their communication during our stay was great. The Cave itself is beautifully appointed with a gorgeous terrace, looking out to the stunning view of the Sassi, we were blown away. The shower is a real surprise and treat. Matera is a special and magical place.Thank you so much.

The cave was absolutely beautiful. The view was stunning. The welcome was lovely. You can walk everywhere. It’s a very quiet area. You have to park your car on the outskirts of the town, pay for public parking, and also pay for a tax- |~ extra 60 euros . Despite all that, our stay was excellent.

Sassi Stay in Matera - beautiful

The cava is exactly as shown and described online. The view from the terrace looks directly into the Sassi. The location can’t be beat, it’s right near the old city and new City so you have a central location to see everything. The beds were comfortable and the air conditioner works great on a hot day. Our hosts were amazing. They provided us a lovely breakfast of fresh tarts, pastries, meats, yogurts, and milk/cereals. They even left us local wine to enjoy at home and suggested several tours. They offered to set up a dinner on the terrace but we opted to have them set up a reservation at a great local restaurant in the Sassi. They were responsive and answered all of our questions within minutes. We will stay here again if we visit Matera.

An Unforgettable, Fantastic Experience

Can I award 10 stars? 100? This was without doubt the absolute best VRBO experience we have ever had, and we have rented probably 100+ VRBO properties over the years all over Europe and Italy. The property itself is stunning -- you are in the most luxurious "cave" imaginable. The bathroom is gorgeous with modern fixtures. High-quality bed linens and towels. The view from the terrace is drop-dead stunning. You are perfectly located to walk to everything you would want to do or see in Matera. There is a very nice restaurant right next door. But the hosts are what make this place so amazing. Gianfranco and Rosalba are the most generous, giving hosts we have every encountered. Gianfranco picked us up at the garage and returned us there at the end of our stay. That was a godsend. Upon our arrival, the cave was full of food and beverages for us! Coffee, milk, fresh pastries -- an entire tart! A bottle of wine! There was fruit (apples, kiwi, pears), two kinds of cereal, bread, salami, pasta, olive oil, a can of Italian tomatoes, garlic! Gianfranco was super responsive and helpful in every way. I HIGHLY recommend this property! One hint: use the underground section of the garage - much cheaper and very easy with instructions in English.

One of a kind!

Amazing accommodation ! This was our first visit to Matera and the La Cava Nel Barisano did not disappoint! Both Rosalba and Gianfranco were fantastic hosts. Every detail was thought of, including Gianfranco shuttling us from the public parking to LaCava and back once our stay was completed! I highly recommend this vacation rental! Easy access to good Trattorias as well as an incredible view of ancient Matera!

A cave with a view!

We stayed for a week in the suite, and had a wonderful time in Matera and surrounding towns. There are many things to see, and do, and eat in Matera. The cave suite experience was enjoyable and unique. Rosalba kept us fortified with delicious homemade fruit cakes. Highly recommended!

Perfect apartment, location, hosts

We stayed a week in beautifully renovated cave apartment with a spa bath, terrace, view, and location. The hosts were so thoughtful and generous, leaving a variety of delicious food for us and arranging transfer from a previous location and a taxi to the train station. I cannot express how special it was to live in this gorgeous space. Living for six days in Sassi Barisano was unforgettable, and always looking out over the Sassi, caves, churches, hills and evocative walkways of Matera was a dream come true. We recommend La Lopa for a romantic dinner of Materan specialties and Rusticone for the best focaccia sandwiches on the planet. Grazia Rosalba and Gianfranco per tutti.

Cave dwelling luxury experience

We had a wonderful stay here!! Our cave “home” was exceptional and had everything one could possibly dream of and more. When we arrived, we had arranged a aperitif for the two of us. This presentation was exquisite and delicious. We sat on the terrace covered by a beautiful large cream umbrella overlooking Matera. Our host were fantastic and they made our 3 night stay the highlight of our month long trip to Italy. It is truly a “must stay!!”

Incredibly enchanting stay!

If you are looking for the most enchanting stay, look no further than the La Cava in the Barisano Suite. You will not be disappointed. The cave is absolutely amazing from the incredible shower, the ambient lighting in the little nooks of the cave walls, and all the comforts and touches of a luxury hotel. And the views from the terrace are breathtaking. But, if that wasn't enough, the hosts, Gianfranco and Rosalba did not overlook any detail to make sure we had all we needed and were available to answer questions and take care of any requests we had. It's not often you arrive to a refrigerator stocked with beverages, meats, and a bottle of wine, along with cakes and bread. Thank you, Gianfranco and Rosalba. Matera and your cave was a highlight of our 3 week trip to Italy!

Family trip to Italy

This was my first time using VRBO internationally and I was extremely happy with the service and the owner. I really appreciated that they allowed a 100% refund as close to my stay and that they didn’t require final payment so far in advance. Many American rentals are not so generous or trusting. Fortunately our travel went as expected and there was no need to cancel, etc. The Cava in Barisano suite was lovely and Gianfranco was so helpful throughout the process. Communications were great and he gave nice instructions on where to park our car during the stay. He even coordinated a taxi for us on arrival. The suite was stocked with fruit, pastries, bottled water, and coffee which was a welcome touch. Matera is just magical. Thank you so much!

Our stay was perfect! This place had more then everything you could possibly want. It was very comfortable, great patio, wonderful location. Our host was so sweet and extremely helpful. He booked our cab fron the parking and our tour of Matera! We highly recommend this VRBO in Matera.

OMG We’re staying in a cave…….And we Love it!!

Staying here was one of the most unique experiences. Beyond my dreams. If you go to Matera please choose this accommodation. You will be so happy. Plus the owners are so friendly and helpful. The provided us with food, fruit, drinks and even wine. And wait till you see the shower .. We have traveled a lot and this place is one of the best!

We just loved our luxury stay in Matera’ sassy.

Great location, abounded breakfast. When I book a place to stay, my first preference always is a cleanliness, so I was fully satisfied! The owners met us as an old friends (we arrived at 1 AM, and they were patiently waiting for us). This place is good for one family (not two), since there’re no 2 separate bedrooms but one large space divided by 2 sections with the wall in between them. If you come with a car, there’s no parking. But the owner was very helpful to advise us where to park. We would love to come back!
