Excellent location close to the Cathedral. Very smart frontage looking towards the Cathedral with good views from dining room and bar/lounge. My room to the side of the hotel overlooked a small lane and mature trees. Wonderfully quite and able to hear the Cathedral clock chinlming throughout the day between 7 a.m. and 11 p.m. For me, very restful and reassuring. Breakfast provided a very broad range of foods and certainly met all my wishes: porridge, haddock with poached egg, berry fruit and fresh yoghurt. Other choices include cold meats, cheeses, cooked food for the grand English breakfast, toasts and muffins. High performing, polite and efficient staff taking appropriate orders and clearing tables very quickly. Alas, my evening meal did not meet the standards set by the Breakfast team. Limited but friendly staff. A reasonable menu but too much novelty in presentation attempts. The Panna Cotta really should be plain, simply and wobbly. It does not need a portion of rhubarb nor a 'set' strawberry topping. If there is a desire to enhance this pudding then all that is required are a few fresh raspberries, nothing more. My room quite with an opening sash window. In an old part of the building with almost Victorian gothic ceiling which I liked. Heavy window curtains which are properly hung and effective. However, the room and ensuite do need updating. The table is stained and the shower curtain is not long enough to sit within the shower base, hence wet floor after showering.
