The Ampherlaw Cottage is perfectly situated in the rolling hills of central lower Scotland, the "Lowlands." From there I was able to adventure out and explore almost everywhere except the outer islands. During the four weeks I was there, crisscrossing the area, I drove almost 2,500 miles, stopping in the small villages and hamlets as well as the larger towns and big cities of Glasgow, Edinburgh, and Inverness. The cottage itself is a masterpiece of comfort and rustic elegance that captures the flavor of an 1850s baronial mini-manor, so much so that I enjoyed the down days at "home" between adventures almost as much as the far-flung adventures themselves. If one desires to capture the essence of Scotland and literally breath in the magical atmosphere of the isolated roads, small-town hospitality, surrounding hills, sheep-studded pastures, and distant forest-scapes, Ampherlaw Cottage is the place.
