Shipload Cottage was absolutely perfect in every way. It is exactly as described on here. It was spotlessly clean and welcoming, even though certain items, I am told, had been removed due to Covid19. It’s a very quirky little cottage, with the kitchen and en-suite bedroom downstairs and the main bedroom and bathroom upstairs. Everything you need in the kitchen is there and the addition of a table top freezer is very handy. The hot water is plentiful and a nice soak in the bath, after an extremely long journey down from the Midlands, was most welcome. We sat out most evenings on the little patio area, taking in the beautiful views over the fields. Their woodlands, unfortunately, were not open to walk through which was a shame, but even though the cottage is very remote, you can easily get anywhere in Devon from it. The village of Hartland is a couple of miles down the road and a pleasant walk if you’re up to it. The beach at Hartland Quay was stunning. It’s very rocky, but can be walked over in strong shoes. We were blessed to have had good weather which just made the whole view there quite spectacular - especially the way the rocks had worn away over the years! Very rugged, but breathtaking. Clovelly is about 3.5 miles away - we went with the intention of staying a couple of hours and then going on somewhere else, but there was so much to see we stayed all day, enjoying a jug of sangria on the quay. Clovelly village is a Heritage site and owned privately by a family. It is totally cobbled everywhere and the little streets down to the quay are very steep - although there is a landrover service to and from the village.
We had a fantastic time in Devon, and going back each evening to Shipload Cottage was the icing on the cake! Martin, the manager was very helpful and if we needed anything, we only had to ask. We were so impressed with Shipload Cottage, we booked a two week stay there next Summer, too!!
